I would be willing to cut the Obama fan club some slack if they were intellectually honest enough to admit that they have a personal interest in protecting their candidate’s image and that they are loyal to a candidate and not so much an ideology. Going crazy over The New Yorker cover or getting anti-Obama blogs shut down (albeit temporarily) makes me question their commitment to free speech - which is the number one issue that keeps me calling myself a liberal every day.
I do like what Jon Stewart had to say in The New York Times this morning about the trouble with comics in making jokes about Obama (my emphasis):
When Mr. Stewart on “The Daily Show” recently tried to joke about Mr. Obama changing his position on campaign financing, for instance, he met with such obvious resistance from the audience, he said, “You know, you’re allowed to laugh at him.” Mr. Stewart said in a telephone interview on Monday, “People have a tendency to react as far as their ideology allows them.”
